Family camping adventures often come with one big challenge: finding a vehicle that is compact enough for off-road exploration but spacious enough for everyone to sleep comfortably. South African camper specialist Bushwakka believes it has solved that problem with the launch of its new Kamelback 4 camper.
Built on the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series platform, the latest Bushwakka Kamelback transforms one of the world’s most trusted off-road pickups into a fully functional family adventure camper. The biggest upgrade? It can now comfortably sleep four people without dramatically increasing the camper’s footprint.
For outdoor enthusiasts looking for a capable overlanding vehicle that can take the whole family deep into the wilderness, the Kamelback 4 could be one of the most exciting camper releases of the year.

Bushwakka Turns a Two-Sleeper Into a Family Adventure Camper
When Bushwakka first introduced the original Kamelback camper, it was designed primarily for couples. The camper featured a large fold-out side sleeping tent that provided a comfortable double bed while maintaining a compact overall design.

However, many enthusiasts immediately noticed that the camper’s unique pop-up roof design seemed capable of supporting additional sleeping space.
Bushwakka has now taken full advantage of that potential. The company redesigned the roof section by extending it forward with a small cab-over section. This modification creates enough room for an additional sleeping area while preserving valuable standing room inside the camper.
The result is a smart dual-bed layout that allows families to travel together without needing a larger expedition truck.
Clever Sleeping Layout Makes Room for Four
The standout feature of the Kamelback 4 is undoubtedly its innovative sleeping arrangement.
The original lower bed remains inside the fold-out side tent and measures approximately 155 cm by 180 cm. This spacious bed comfortably accommodates two adults.
Above it, Bushwakka has added a second sleeping area inside the pop-up roof section. A fold-down extension panel expands the upper bed during the night, creating a sleeping platform measuring around 135 cm by 180 cm.
During the day, the extension folds away neatly, helping maximize interior living space.
This design gives the camper enough room to sleep a family of four without dramatically increasing vehicle size. Parents can occupy one sleeping area while children use the second bed, making family road trips significantly more comfortable.
For adventurers who enjoy extended overlanding journeys, this practical layout offers an ideal balance between comfort and mobility.
Compact Kitchen Packed With Smart Storage Solutions
Adding an extra bed required Bushwakka engineers to rethink the interior layout.
Because part of the roof now serves as a sleeping area, the company redesigned the kitchen section to fit within a slightly smaller camper body.
The new kitchen remains highly functional despite its compact size. A neatly organized pantry provides shelves, storage cubbies, and dedicated compartments for cooking equipment. Bushwakka even includes a complete dish set designed for four people.
The camper also features dedicated space for a large 90-liter refrigerator or freezer, making it easier to store food during extended off-grid trips.
Additional storage compartments are integrated throughout the camper, including upper cabinets, underbody compartments, and external storage areas.
A bamboo work surface folds away when not in use, helping maximize available space while still providing a practical food preparation area at camp.
An included dual-burner camping stove and large 180-degree awning further enhance the outdoor cooking experience.
Built for Remote Travel and Off-Grid Living
Like any serious overland camper, the Kamelback 4 focuses heavily on self-sufficiency.
The camper comes equipped with a 100Ah lithium battery system and DC-to-DC charging capability. Buyers can also choose an optional 380-watt roof-mounted solar system for additional off-grid power generation.

LED lighting is installed throughout both the interior and exterior of the camper, helping reduce energy consumption during extended stays away from civilization.
A 90-liter fresh water tank provides water for cooking, cleaning, and outdoor shower use. Bushwakka relocated the water system to accommodate the redesigned camper layout, placing the faucet and water heater near the rear entry area.
While the setup differs slightly from the original Kamelback model, it still provides all the essentials needed for remote camping adventures.
The camper itself weighs approximately 750 kilograms, helping maintain the Land Cruiser’s renowned off-road capability.
Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series Remains the Perfect Foundation
One of the biggest strengths of the Kamelback 4 is its platform.
Bushwakka builds the camper on the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series double-cab pickup, a vehicle widely respected for its durability, reliability, and ability to tackle harsh terrain.
To install the camper, Bushwakka removes the factory pickup tray and mounts the camper module directly onto the chassis. This creates a more integrated and rugged setup designed specifically for serious overlanding.
Whether crossing deserts, exploring mountain trails, or traveling through remote regions, the Land Cruiser’s reputation gives owners confidence that the vehicle can handle challenging conditions.
Pricing Makes It an Attractive Option
Perhaps surprisingly, the four-sleeper version is actually slightly cheaper than the original two-person model.
The Bushwakka Kamelback 4 is priced at approximately SAR 546,924, which converts to around US$33,675 for the camper module itself.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series vehicle is not included in that price and must be supplied separately by the customer.
Even so, the pricing remains competitive compared to many expedition campers currently available on the market.
For families seeking a compact overland camper with genuine off-road capability, practical living space, and room for four people, the new Bushwakka Kamelback 4 stands out as a creative and highly capable solution.
